INFORMATION CHECKED: 24 AUGUST 2026
Sri Lanka’s entry and ETA rules can change. This guide reflects official information available on the date above, but travellers should recheck the official ETA portal and their airline immediately before departure. An ETA is permission to travel, not a guarantee of admission; the immigration officer makes the final entry decision.
Planning a trip to Sri Lanka begins with one practical question: what do you need to present before you board and when you arrive? For most short-term visitors, the answer starts with a passport and an Electronic Travel Authorization, usually called an ETA. The system is straightforward when you use the official website, choose the correct category and copy every passport detail accurately. Problems usually begin when travellers rely on old blog posts, unofficial payment sites or last-minute assumptions.
This independent guide explains the current Sri Lanka ETA process step by step, including the 2026 free tourist ETA arrangement, passport validity, arrival documentation, double-entry rules and extensions. It is written for ordinary holidaymakers, business visitors and transit passengers; it is not legal advice, and special-purpose travel may require direct guidance from a Sri Lankan mission.

ESSENTIALS AT A GLANCE
What is a Sri Lanka ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorization is an electronic approval for a short visit. It is commonly used for tourism, short business travel or transit. You normally apply online before travelling; the approval is linked to the passport information entered in the application. This is why the passport number, nationality, date of birth and expiry date must match the travel document exactly.
The Department of Immigration & Emigration is the issuing authority. The official guidance says an ETA holder may enter Sri Lanka within three months from the date of issue. The permitted stay then begins from arrival and depends on the category and scheme granted. Do not confuse this entry window with the number of days you may remain in the country.
Who needs an ETA in 2026?
The official portal states that foreign nationals generally need an ETA before arrival, subject to the published exemptions and special passport arrangements. A major change took effect on 25 May 2026: nationals of 40 selected countries became eligible for a free tourist ETA for 30 days. Maldives, Seychelles and Singapore are also processed free of charge under reciprocal arrangements; Maldivian nationals receive a 90-day tourist visa through the ETA system.

The 40 nationalities listed in the official notice
Australia · Austria · Bahrain · Belarus · Belgium · Canada · China · Czech Republic · Denmark · Finland · France · Germany · India · Indonesia · Iran · Israel · Italy · Japan · Kazakhstan · Kuwait · Malaysia · Nepal · Netherlands · New Zealand · Norway · Oman · Pakistan · Poland · Qatar · Russia · Saudi Arabia · South Korea · Spain · Sweden · Switzerland · Thailand · Türkiye · United Arab Emirates · United Kingdom · United States of America
The official document includes diplomatic, official, service and ordinary passport holders under the scheme. It also states that eligible travellers must still obtain the ETA before arrival. Always verify your exact passport category and current eligibility on the official notice.
If your passport is not covered by the free arrangement, this does not automatically mean that you cannot use the ETA system. It generally means the normal rules and charges continue to apply. Use the live official fee page instead of relying on a price quoted in an old article, because nationality, purpose and submission method can affect the amount.
Choose the correct ETA category
The purpose of your visit determines the application route. Selecting “tourist” because it looks simpler can create a mismatch if your actual purpose is commercial, professional or media-related. Read the descriptions on the official application before committing to a category.
Tourist ETA
For holidays, sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, medical treatment including Ayurvedic care, and participation in sporting or cultural events where the trip fits the official tourist purposes.
Business ETA
For eligible short business activities such as meetings, negotiations, conferences, workshops or short training. Confirm that the proposed activity is covered before applying.
Transit ETA
For travellers passing through Sri Lanka. The official exemption page describes a free transit ETA for up to 48 hours when documentary proof of onward travel is available.
Special-purpose travel
Journalism, media assignments, NGO or INGO work, political meetings and some other activities may not be eligible for the normal online ETA. Contact a Sri Lankan mission or Immigration before travel.
Before you apply: prepare the details once
The online form is short, but accuracy matters more than speed. Sit down with the passport you will actually use for the trip. Avoid copying details from memory or from an expired passport saved in a booking profile. The official instructions say that passport copies and photographs are not required for the standard online application, although supporting evidence may be needed for a referral or a different visa route.
Sri Lanka ETA application: step by step
01
Start from the official portal
Open the Department of Immigration & Emigration ETA website directly. Check the domain carefully before entering passport or payment information.
02
Read the current notice
Review the homepage announcement, eligibility notes, terms and fee information. Rules may have changed since your flight or hotel was booked.
03
Select the purpose and applicant type
Choose tourist, business or transit, then indicate whether the application is for an individual or group. A third party may apply on a traveller’s behalf, but the traveller remains responsible for the accuracy of the data.
04
Enter passport details exactly
Copy the machine-readable identity details from the passport. Preserve the correct passport number, nationality and dates. Do not use details from a residence card or a previous passport.
05
Review before submission
Check every field against the passport and itinerary. The official sample-notice guidance says submitted details cannot simply be corrected; cancellation and a new application may be required, without a refund.
06
Pay only when applicable
The system should show whether a processing fee applies to the selected nationality and category. Complete payment only on the official portal and keep the transaction record.
07
Save the acknowledgement
A successful submission should generate an acknowledgement. Store the reference number offline as well as in email; it is useful if the approval message is delayed or filtered as spam.
08
Confirm approval before travel
An acknowledgement is not the same as approval. Wait for the approval notice or check the status through the official site. If you receive a referral notice, contact Immigration or the nearest Sri Lankan mission rather than submitting random repeat applications.

How long does approval take?
Many straightforward online applications are processed quickly, but no independent guide should promise instant approval. Data mismatches, payment issues, security review or a referral can add time. Apply with a sensible buffer before departure, then check the application status using the official reference rather than assuming that silence means approval. If the status remains unclear close to travel, use the contact details published by Immigration or contact a Sri Lankan mission.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ≠ APPROVAL
Do not travel on a reference number alone
Save the acknowledgement, but also verify that the application shows approved. Carry a digital and offline copy of the approval notice.
What to carry for check-in and arrival
Airlines check travel documentation before boarding, and Sri Lankan immigration may ask for supporting evidence on arrival. The official ETA guidance lists a passport valid for at least six months from the arrival date, a confirmed return ticket and sufficient funds. The ETA itself is electronically linked, but keeping an accessible copy reduces friction if an airline agent or immigration officer asks to see it.
Passport
Use the same passport as the ETA application. If it is renewed or replaced, recheck whether a new ETA is required.
ETA approval
Keep the PDF, email or screenshot available offline, together with the application reference.
Return or onward ticket
A confirmed booking demonstrates that you plan to leave within the permitted stay.
Stay and funds
Keep the first accommodation address, itinerary and reasonable evidence that you can support the trip.
Arrival card and airport formalities
Foreign visitors complete an arrival, or disembarkation, card in addition to holding an ETA. Airport and Aviation Services has introduced an online arrival-card facility that may be completed shortly before travel; the published airport notice says the online form is available within three days before the journey. A paper card may also be available at the airport. Use only the official airport or government service and enter the same passport and flight details used for the trip.
The airport authority’s arrival procedure guide is a useful last check for the current sequence at Bandaranaike International Airport. Allow extra time when several international flights arrive together.
Can you obtain an ETA on arrival?
The official application guide describes a limited facility at Bandaranaike International Airport for eligible travellers who arrive without prior ETA approval. Additional fees apply, and the traveller must complete the process before immigration. This should be treated as a contingency, not a planning strategy. If the application is referred at the port of entry, the official guidance warns that entry may be refused and the passenger returned to the original destination. Applying before departure is safer and gives time to resolve errors.
Stay length, validity and double entry
For the 40-country free tourist ETA scheme, the official notice provides 30 days from the date of first arrival, with double entry during that period. On the second entry, the traveller receives only the remaining balance of the original 30 days; the clock does not restart. For example, leaving after ten days and returning a week later does not create a fresh 30-day stay.
Maldivian nationals receive 90 days under the reciprocal arrangement described by Immigration. Other categories, nationalities or mission-issued visas can have different conditions. Read the approval notice itself: it is the document that applies to your trip.
Extending a short visit
Visitors who wish to remain beyond the initial period should apply for an extension before the permitted stay expires. The current official ETA extension page describes a maximum total stay of up to 270 days through consecutive grants: 30 days on entry, 60 days at the first extension, then 90 days at the second and third extensions. It also says the online extension portal may be used for applications up to six months, while longer sequences may require the Department or an authorised route.
PLAN AHEAD
An extension is an application, not an automatic entitlement
Check the current eligibility, documents, fees and appointment or online requirements before the expiry date. Keep proof of submission and do not assume that lodging an application automatically authorises an overstay.
Common ETA mistakes—and how to avoid them
01
Using an unofficial website
Sponsored search results and similar-looking domains can add service fees or collect sensitive passport data. Start from eta.gov.lk and check the address bar before submitting.
02
Entering the wrong passport number
One transposed character can make the approval unusable at check-in. Read the number directly from the passport and review it twice.
03
Treating acknowledgement as approval
The submission reference proves that an application was lodged; it does not prove permission to travel. Confirm the final status.
04
Choosing tourism for work
A holiday ETA does not turn professional, journalistic or NGO activity into tourism. Ask the appropriate mission when the purpose is not clearly covered.
05
Applying with the wrong passport
Dual nationals and travellers renewing a passport must use the document they will present. An ETA linked to a different passport may not match airline records.
06
Waiting until the airport
On-arrival processing is limited, costs more and can end in refusal when a case is referred. Advance approval gives you options.
07
Relying on an old fee or rule
Free-ETA lists, fees and visa procedures change. Verify the official portal close to departure rather than relying on a screenshot from months earlier.
Special cases that need extra care
Children
The official exemption guidance states that children under 12 are exempt from the ETA processing fee. They still travel on the documentation required for their nationality and trip; verify how each child should be included in the application.
Transit under 48 hours
A short transit ETA may be free when the stay is no more than 48 hours and documentary evidence of onward travel is available. Confirm whether you will pass immigration or remain airside.
Media and journalism
Journalists, media crews and people producing professional content should not assume that an ordinary tourist ETA is sufficient. Contact the nearest Sri Lankan mission for the correct approval route.
Restricted application routes
The official ETA homepage publishes special sponsor or head-office instructions for certain nationalities. Travellers affected by a special notice should follow Immigration’s current process rather than a generic online tutorial.
Sri Lanka ETA FAQ
Do I need to print the approval?
The ETA is electronic, but official guidance advises keeping a copy for the port of entry. A printed page or offline PDF is useful when connectivity is poor or an airline asks to see proof.
Can someone apply for me?
Yes. The official process allows a third party such as a travel agent, airline, friend or relative to submit an application. Check all information yourself before submission and keep the reference.
Can I correct a mistake after submitting?
Do not assume edits are possible. The official sample guidance says a submitted application may need to be cancelled and a new application lodged; the no-refund policy can still apply.
Does a free ETA mean I can skip the application?
No. The 2026 notice explicitly says eligible nationalities must still obtain ETA before arrival. “Free” refers to processing under the scheme, not exemption from applying.
Can I work on a tourist ETA?
A tourist ETA is for the purposes allowed in that category. Employment and some professional activities require a different visa or prior approval. Ask Immigration or a mission before travel.
What if my application is referred?
Follow the referral instructions and contact the Department or nearest Sri Lankan mission. A referral is a case requiring further review; submitting repeated applications can make the situation harder to understand.

OFFICIAL NEXT STEP
Verify the rules, then apply on the government portal
Use the Sri Lanka Department of Immigration & Emigration ETA website for the current eligibility notice, application, fees and status check. Ceylon Guidebook is an independent travel publication and does not process visas or ETAs.
